CHILDHOOD AND FAMILY
Born to a mortal mother, Sam exhibits no sign of any magical ability. However, his father raised him entirely in the magical world and he exists as part of it. The fact he shows no sign of power is a subject of great shame for both himself and his father, and he is constantly trying to prove his value and prove he is worth bothering with.
Sam grew up very isolated. Despite his father putting time and energy into training him and teaching him about the magical world, Sam wanted for affection and guidance. He longed for intimacy and acceptance and had nobody around him who could share his experiences.
When he met Coral he was finally able to experience affection without a price.
RELATIONSHIP WITH CORAL
When he meets Coral, Sam finally discovers someone who understands and accepts him. He loves her on a pure level like he has never loved anyone else, but is also afraid. His loyalty is to his father who, through a cycle of emotional abuse, has left him lost and confused, and unable to understand love.
Coral tells her about her own mother, who died, and how active she had been in fighting for equality for Beings, including the mermaids he helps his father to Harvest. It leaves him conflicted, torn between his upbringing and his father, and his desire to please and love Coral.
When Coral meets Lilly and Saffron, she becomes more active in the fight against the Harvester, and Sam is faced with a decision of either uniting with her, or coming to his father’s aid. He ultimately realises that the only way to have both Coral and his dad is to unite the two and to separate Coral from her grandmother, Opal’s, coven.
After Coral devotes her loyalty to him, he finally admits his romantic feelings for the girl and the two are intimate, believing she is firmly with him now. He confesses his involvement with the harvesting and takes her to meet his father.
Sam begins to feel envy and resentment about Coral when his father becomes entranced by her, thrilled to have a magical person to work with. This again conflicts him, longing to achieve a similar state of approval from his father and jealous that Coral has earned it so easily, but also still desperate to be loved by Coral.
Though accidental, the feelings that bubbled inside him culminated in him killing Coral, after Lilly and Saffron killed his father. He lost the two people he cared for in any way because he was unable to choose a side to stand on.
